Scottish clansmen would traditionally wear a badge depicting the crest of their chief, in order to show their loyalty to the Clan.
Clansmen consisted of both "native men," who had a direct blood relationship with their chief, as well as any others who had sought
the protection of the clan. Today, a chief can accept or deny whom he wants to into the Clan. Most Clans will accept anyone who will
offer their allegiance, in addition to the the traditional Septs and affliliations.
Today's meaning of Tartans as the plaid cloth
which color and design despicts a Scottish Clan comes from the 1800s. Highlanders loved tartans so much that they were identified
with it, and upon the visit from King George IV in 1822, the clans were invited to greet their King in "their proper clan tartan."
Most did not have a clan tartan, and many were created or renamed for that occasion. From this point on, the idea was established
that in order to even be a proper tartan, it had to be a named tartan, a clan tartan.
